Question by sportylilchica1: Is it illegal in the state of NH for a full time student NOT to be covered by their parents health insurance?
I’m required insurance for sports and other campus activities but I am not covered by my parents Health Insurance yet they have me under Vision and Dental through my fathers work.

I was informed a while back that they were changing laws around that Full Time Students have to be covered by their parents Health insurance (until age 24).

Is this true? Or Do you have any advice on finding cheap student health insurance? :/

Best answer:

Answer by StephenWeinstein
No.

The change in law gives the parents the option to have the student covered, if the parents want. It does not require the parents to have the student covered. It only gives them the choice.

If you want cheap heath insurance, then you probably have to get regular health insurance. In other words, whatever health insurance you would have gotten if you were not a student. If you only consider “student” health insurance, then you might have to pay more.

We know that loving and caring for children doesn’t stop at school graduation. With the joy and excitement of sending a child off to college comes a new set of parental responsibilities that encompasses everything from financial aid to finding affordable housing. Another consideration is making sure adequate college student health insurance is in place for college-bound children.

As difficult as it may be to think about taking on an additional expense when facing tuition and book fees, making sure a student’s health care is covered is as necessary as registering for classes. College students often look for ways to cut expenses, and sometimes gamble with their health insurance as a way to pinch a few pennies. A recent survey by Commonwealth Fund Task Force revealed that 10 percent of students would opt out of paying for their health insurance if they could. The same study also showed that people ages 19 to 29 are twice as likely to be without health care coverage than children and senior citizens, and the number of uninsured young people in this age bracket has increased from 22 to 30 percent.

Parents need to take the time to check their own health care coverage and look at the policy’s fine print. Most family insurance plans will cover a full-time student under the age of 22, or until college graduation. Read carefully, however: Some plans may not cover dependent children after they reach their 18th or 21st birthday, regardless of student status. If a student changes his or her college enrollment status from full-time to part-time, there is a good chance it will affect insurance coverage from the provider. Understand the requirements of the policy to avoid rude and expensive surprises later.

With a closed-network HMO or PPO, be aware that non-emergency care is provided only within a designated area. Students attending college away from home will need additional insurance to cover expenses such as routine doctor’s visits, x-rays, lab work, and prescriptions. Many colleges offer low-cost supplemental insurance options to help with expenses.

If a child is not covered under the parent’s current health care plan, there are a variety of student health insurance plans available. These student plans vary from state to state, but typically offer coverage to the general student population, including older and/or married students, graduate students, and international students.

On-campus health care clinics offer another affordable health care option for students at reduced rates. The variety of services offered by on-campus clinics is dependent on the size of the campus, with larger universities offering 24-hour, fully staffed, full-service facilities, while smaller colleges may be limited in their scope and be open only part-time. Generally, however, these smaller facilities are well geared toward handling minor emergencies, regular check-ups, and lab tests, and can offer references to off-campus medical doctors and hospitals. College orientation materials should include information about health care services provided.

Education is truly a global phenomenon which incorporates the distinctive faculties and flavors of individual places and countries. Arranging for overseas travel and availing scholarship is, however, an extremely costly and laborious affair. Travel insurance and emergency travel assistance program ensures that this procedure is not disturbed by unwanted events or unforeseen occurrences. An unfortunate medical condition or peripheral condition (like dissolution/bankruptcy of airlines/ travel agents) could ruin the entire tour effort. Health insurance for international student travel ensures that the expended money or major part of it is recovered or reimbursed in cases of cancellation or interruption of insured trip. The subscription to the international student travel health insurance could only be availed by certified students less than 25 years of age. The academic trip should also be sanctioned by recognized academic institutions and should have a specified tenure.Patriot T.R.I.P (Travel Itinerary Protection) Student insurance policy arranges for the recovery of particular non-refundable payments that were utilized for the trip. The health insurance for international student travel coverage also ensures the recovery of unused payments, security deposits and the amount for purchased tickets or travel passes. The insurance policy assures the student of providing dedicated multilingual service, claims administrations and telecom assistance that is globally active, 24×7. Students trip insurance offers separate coverage provisions for trip interruptions/ cancellations, trip delay, baggage theft/loss/ delay and medical conditions. The elected coverage amount for the trip per student could be up to ,000. Patriot T.R.I.P Student insurance would be instrumental in reimbursing non-refundable tour expenses in cases of emergency illness/injury/death of the student of any member of the immediate family. The coverage would also be applicable for events like financial despondency of travel organizer, terrorist attacks/threats, inclement weather conditions and natural disasters.Patriot T.R.I.P Student insurance offers a coverage amount of up to 0 for travel delay and up to 0 for theft/loss/damage to necessary personal possessions. The eligible conditions for travel delay include delay by trip organizer, loss of passport or travel documents, medical isolations and illness/injuries and inclement weather that might hinder departure. The health insurance for international student travel policy also arranges for primary and ancillary emergency medical services and offers coverage up to ,000 for the same. The services include engaging prescribed local medical transport, medical evacuation and repatriation. The health insurance for international student travel also arranges for emergency reunion and repatriation of biological remains in terminal cases. The Patriot T.R.I.P Student insurance stipulates certain pre-existing conditions that would nullify coverage clauses. With a bevy of crucial recovery facilities during tour cancellations and an extremely simple enrollment process, it is evident why Patriot T.R.I.P Student insurance is a primary choice for health insurance for international student travel policies.

If you consider deeply, you will first need to understand that the costs of medication couldactually be relatively higher in the country you are visiting as compared to the home country. You can practically be without a medical short term health insurance when you are in anothercountry, for work, deduction or leisure, if your medical coverage does not extend to that foreign country.

Low Premium And Discounts:

Visitors Medical Insurance is available for a short period of five days right up to one year. Aperson would be adding a lot of unpredictability to the travel budget determined prior to takingoff for the trip if he or she does not take up a visitor’s medical insurance. The chance of fallingsick in another country, due to change in climate or any air, water or insect borne disease couldcompletely ruin the effort made. One of the major benefits of international student Visitors Health Insurance is that it has quite a low premium.

The best part is different discounts are offered to part time and full time students, and othersavailing of the facility depending upon certain specified eligibility criterion. Exchangeprogram members, research scholars etc an avail of the benefits. With reasonable monthlypremium payments, you can opt for an international student health insurance which is more than sufficient to fulfill all the requirements of the host and home government and the school.

Besides getting huge short term health insurance coverage, students also get prescriptionmedication coverage. If the student is suspecting illness and wants preventive measures in place, the international student health insurance policy takes care of the fiscal requirement.

Pre-existing Conditions In Special Cases:

*A number of other policies may not provide coverage on pre-existing health conditions, and hence the international health insurance is valuable. It can be a huge plus forsportsmen who deal with other intricacies like cancelled flights and opportunities with thehelp of the trip cancellation insurance fine print.

*The other benefit is that the insurance plan can be managed online which also includes the ability to renew it. The policy is available within no time, as the application process issimple.

*Even minor health problems like dental issues, besides sports related eventualities are covered by the international health insurance plans. Even pregnancy issues during that particular period, with a reasonable amount of additional premium.

*Visitors Medical Insurance policy does not include very high deductibles. In caseof hospitalization, the person may also get a reasonable amount of cash facility (ifincluded in the fine print) for medication post-surgery or injury rehab. For medicationthrough prescription many policies also pay out half the amount of the actualcharge. Newborn care is also included in the insurance if the conception of child isdetermined as ‘after the effective date of coverage’. The policies also help to fit in tripcancellation insurance to enable you to deal with unavoidable cancellations and delays.

Many students are now opting for some of the most expensive countries for further or highereducation. It gets very difficult to first of all get private loans for education and upkeep in the foreign land. You could be under a huge burden, if you have to incur medical costs, without Visitors Health Insurance.

Visitors medical insurance is designed to cover those who may need togo abroad either for further studies or to visit someone. Doing so without a visitor’s medical insurance can be a pretty foolish step.

I used to be under my parents Medicaid.
I lost it. I am 20 years old.

I have been given the runaround between 6-8 different phone numbers, all unsure about what to say to me as to why it was terminated when I was supposed to be up for review at age 21. I have a restraining order against my family. So if my parents booted me off their plan, fine. I left their totalitarian Islamic lifestyle and if that means carrying this burden, I will face it.

I have problems. I have 4 impacted teeth that need to be taken out because they are going to cause infection problems. Ever since losing insurance, I canceled the surgery.
I have THREE bulging discs, two in my neck and one in lower spine. I no longer have chiropractic or orthopedic care. I was in the Emergency Room a few days ago and was sent home with prescriptions but had no way to pay for it at the pharmacy. I was supposed to go to a follow up appointment but how can I pay the money for that, too, when I’m living on my own working two to three jobs and going to college full-time.

What should I do? Is there a way to apply for Medicaid on my own?

I have been going to a community college and need to finish up next fall semester so I have 3 classes so far. The deal the community colleges have with transferring to other schools (in nj anyways) is that once you graduate with the courses indicated by your major, the credits will definitely transfer to (all nj state schools for example) and only about 60 or 70 needed for your major will transfer, not any extra classes.

Anyways I only have 3 that I need. With my dads health insurance, Aetna, I need to be a full time student in order to stay on his plan. What can I do to get around this? Is my only option to take extra classes that I don’t need to fill up?
OH also— Do you think I should maybe re-take a class I didn’t do well in? Would that be a good idea or kind of a waste
Full time is 12 credits
Its about $300 a class, give or take. And hmm to the answerer 8 or 9, do you really think I can schedule a full plate, send the paper to the insurance, then drop it?

Long story short
1. I’m a casual/social marijuana smoker. thus i had smoked in a college party about a week before what happens in #2
2. I had a few projects due and 2 exams in two consecutive days, thus i went with very little sleep and high amount of “test-like anxiety” for a period of 3 days/nights, trying to make sure i make As in all of them (which i did)
3. after the last of the mentioned exams/projects, i went home with extreme fatigue, b4 i could pass out, for the 1st time in my 24 years of life i had an “anxiety attack” – i didn’t have any previous such experiences this i though of it as a heart attack and called 911 – went 2 ER. I turned out to be “healthy like a horse” quoted by the doctor. THC was found in my blood and blamed for the incident.
4. I have mandatory health insurance with my F-1 visa, i’m yet to file a claim.
5. would like to know if i file
a) my insurance pays anything
b) would drug related info on medical records be shared with school &/or government?
Notes:
1. I have been smoking ever since i was 18, on non-routine social basis except for first few months
2. Since the incident i have stayed off of weed
3. I’m not sure about how this may or may not violate my visa status, and am seeking info on who this info will be shared with after disclosed to insurance company by hospital upon my claim being filed. i just want to avoid getting my visa revoked and deported-as this was not caused in any way by a week old smoking experience (i smoked a blunt that night of some really potent stuff, so it could have well stayed in my system for that period of time).
4. I did sign a paper in hospital that notified me and confirmed that i know my info will not be shared with any other parties.
5. my claim form has a full disclosure clause that i have to sign which will allow any and all related info to this incident to be shared with insurance company.
6. Insurance coverage is provided by my college thru this company.

I am a dependant on my mother’s health insurance from her employer. Recently I was sent a mail requesting a proof of enrollment to show that I am indeed a full-time student. I put in a proof of enrollment that I am taking the 12 units in college, plus I also sent a copy of my schedule for this semester.

Today I get a letter saying that my insurance has been terminated and I am no longer eligible because of my age.

I thought full time students who are 21 and under can still be placed as a dependant? Is there a chance they just didnt receive my mail? If thats so, then why didnt they state that they didnt receive the required proof of enrollment instead of terminating me for my age?

I want to call them but they are closed for the weekend, so any advice from you guys so I know what I am saying when im on the phone with them would be helpful.
Btw it is not grades, I have a 3.5 gpa.
All those telling me to call them up is useless since I already plan to, what I need is any advice on what to say when I do call them on monday, since they are closed for the weekend.

So you have finished the requisite 12 of years of school, gone to prom, played sports, scored well on the SATS, written endless essays, “Why I Am Right For Your School”, and are finally accepted into college. Congratulations! Before you take a class or even settle into your new dorm, there are an endless amount forms and paperwork to complete.

Of the many requirements to entering universities, health insurance is critical.Typically, students are covered by their parents’ policy or are covered by insurance gained through employment as they continue to work and study. Schools also offer BSBC student health insurance, at affordable prices, through student services offices. However, many students will need to look for individual coverage to have the required student health insurance. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina provides this much needed student health insurance for North Carolina University students through independent NC health insurance agents.

Students are always on a budget. Health insurance may seem unnecessary, but it can literally be a life saver if a minor injury or illness goes untreated. An independent Blue Cross Blue Shield NC agent can help choose the right coverage. For example, not all plans will allow an out-of-network-benefit, but some plans do permit members to use the student health clinic on campus, saving money and time. Paying for individual health insurance may be cheaper as a healthy student is not subsidizing healthcare for all of the students covered by a school plan. For a NC University student who is not chronically ill, an independent plan may be more affordable. Another way to save money is to have major medical coverage only. Minor colds and scrapes are covered by the individual.

BCBS of North Carolina offers plans that have variable co-pays and deductibles, resulting in lower monthly premiums. With an independent BSBC coverage, you choose the plan that works best for you. Additionally, an individual policy can continue after a student graduates. Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance policies are an added benefit as you look for employment or particularly, if you decide to become self-employed. Enter “health insurance North Carolina” online to locate Osborne Insurance Services, Inc. Experienced agents here can work with each individual to find a BCBS student health plan personalized for you and your budget. Look to Osborne Insurance Services, Inc. for all health insurance in North Carolina.
