How much should I expect to pay for individual health insurance?

I’m leaving my job to go back to school. Continuing my present health plan through COBRA will cost nearly $400 monthly. I’m 25 and a healthy moderate social drinking non-smoker. Can I do better than $400 a month?
How much will the region/city I live in affect my costs? I live in a studio for the same price my sister rents a 3 bedroom house. Is it that kind of cost of living situation? Or will the price I pay for health insurance vary more based on environmental hazards, crime rates, etc.?

Thanks, by the way, for your really helpful, specific answers. Loads of help.

Chances are low. Shop the net and see what you find.

In my area a health 25yo female non-smoker could expect to pay $120 – $150 per month for a good plan with doctor co-pays and a $1000 deductible. If you need maternity coverage you could expect around $300 per month. You should see a local independent agent who can guide you rather than shopping on the net. Your cost with an agent is the same as getting it on the net and they will know the local market to make sure you are getting the coverage you want with a good selection of doctors.

You might, if you don’t have any pre-existing conditions, you should be able to get it for $250 a month at your age. If you have pre-existing conditions, you might not find anyone willing to write you AT ALL.
