How has your experience been with Blue Cross Blue Sheild Individual Health Insurance?

My current employer does not offer Health Insurance so I’m looking at different companies

Blue Cross is a different company with different products, rates, services, etc.. in most every state. In some states they have a good reputation and others they aren’t the most sought after coverage.

Find a broker to help you find coverage. They’re free to use.

First, determine what type and level of coverage you need, ie. Are you more concerned with Dr.’s office visits, yearly physicals, etc.? Or, are you more concerned with in-hospital/major surgery type’s of issues ? Different companies offer different benefits. Some will cover things such as mental illness, rehab, maternity, well-baby care, etc.. Others don’t even offer them. Is it only good in the state that you purchased it in ? Will it pay if you’re hurt/sick on vacation in another country ?
Make a list of what is important to you Before you buy. Do not deviate from that list if at all possible. You may have to give up some things in order to get others. Do your research and get the best policy you can comfortably afford.
To find out what Is/Is Not covered in a health insurance policy, go to, and read, the limitations and exclusions section of the brochure of any company you may be considering buying from. If the brochure does not list them, ask the broker/sales person for a sample policy before committing.
Also know that ” most ” health insurance policies pay what is known as U.C.R., which stands for Usual, Customary, and Reasonable. It refers to the cost of medical treatments in any geographic area.
Guess who determines what is ” Reasonable ” when it comes to a claim ?

Both answers above are correct. I must add, however, that all individual policies are horrible compared to group policies offered by large employers. Don’t be shocked to find out that many things will not be covered under an individual policy.

I have BCBS individual coverage. Like any health insurance contract you need to understand what is and is not covered. Once you understand that you can balance the two sides of the equation, Cost vs. Policy Benefits.

The BCBS policy does not include the “bells and whistles” which makes it more affordable.
